| Leading practice in community engagement and development |
QRC’s member companies are committed to strong community engagement, and many are involved in activities to enhance the livability of their regional communities.
Examples of this involvement are available on websites of individual companies, and often reported as community development or partnership initiates.
In addition, and increasingly, the broader resources sector is striving for leading practice in community engagement and development. Community engagement and development are essential components of any operation, throughout the project lifecycle from feasibility to project closure. While there are many publications and studies available, the following may provide some guidance and assistance in community engagement and related activities.
|
| Minerals Council of Australia Enduring Value framework | |
Enduring Value is a framework that commits MCA member companies to sustainable development in the industry, whereas the QRC policy is an internal document to guide and direct activities and work of the QRC Secretariat.
|
| Leading practice examples and case studies from Queensland | |
QRC is committed to providing strategic leadership in social policy and community development, specifically raising awareness of industry achievements, encouraging companies to strive to achieve leading practice in community development and engagement, and working with government, industry and other stakeholders to facilitate equitable outcomes for member companies.
Many QRC member companies contribute to local communities, offering financial and in-kind support to community development projects in the rural and regional communities in which they operate. The provision and allocation of such support is at the discretion of individual companies and often specific sites, and therefore the projects supported vary considerably across the industry.
Resource sector companies support a broad array of projects, such as:
|
| offering a range of scholarships and training opportunities | |
providing additional resources for local schools
supporting training and development in a range of professional and community roles
supporting construction and provision of local medical facilities
assisting medical staff, particularly through accommodation
providing funding for medical research programs
supporting natural resource management, environmental and sustainable development initiatives
supporting traditional owners and indigenous groups
supporting cultural and arts activities
providing financial assistance to relevant charities
assisting a range of sport and leisure programs and community organisations
sponsoring local races and other events. |
|
| ICMM Community Development Toolkit | |
This publication outlines 17 tools for use throughout the lifecycle of resource sector projects, and is intended to cover the assessment, planning, management and evaluation phases of community development as well as stakeholder relations.
|
| Leading Practice Sustainable Development Program for the Mining Industry: Community Engagement and Development | |
This handbook is part of the broader Leading Practice Sustainable Development Program, delivered jointly by the MCA and Commonwealth Department of Resources, Energy and Tourism. The handbook aims to outline the benefits of engagement with, and contributing to the development of, communities, and provide a framework, key principles and examples to assist companies to plan and manage community engagement and development.
