Queensland Resources Council
G8 endorsement sets stage for Rockhampton conference

The endorsement of Australia’s Global Carbon Capture and Storage Institute by world leaders at the G8 meeting in Italy has set the stage for an outstanding conference to open the second Queensland Resources Exposition in Rockhampton on 20 July.

The conference, convened by the Queensland Resources Council, will focus on the global energy outlook and the response to climate change with keynote addresses from:

Australian Minister for Resources, Energy and Tourism, Martin Ferguson
Charge D’affaires for the Delegation of the European Commission to Australia and New Zealand, John Richards
Chief Executive of the Global Carbon Capture and Storage Institute, Nick Otter.

‘This is a rare and timely opportunity to take stock of where the world is in relation to the development of low-emission energy technologies,’ said Queensland Resources Council Chief Executive, Michael Roche.

‘It is of major relevance to Queensland as not only the world’s largest seaborne coal exporter but also home to two pilot carbon capture projects and what’s expected to be the world’s first new generation coal-fired power station.’

The G8 countries have committed to the development of 20 large-scale CCS projects, to be in operation by 2020.

‘The Global CCS Institute established by Prime Minister Rudd will play a vital role in developing the partnerships needed to make these projects a reality.

‘The Institute enjoys the backing of the world’s developed and emerging economies, which gives a clear insight into the role that CCS is needed to play in reducing global greenhouse emissions.

‘As noted by Us President Obama, despite the growth of renewable energy, coal will continue to be a major source of energy for some time and without global action like CCS, fossil fuel emissions are forecast to increase by 130 per cent by 2050.’

The QREX international conference at Rockhampton’s Leichhardt Hotel will launch of week of activities in central Queensland focused on the contribution and future of region’s globally significant resource sector industries.
