There is a wide variety of jobs available in the minerals and energy resources sector.
As the sector has become a sophisticated high-tech industry, most jobs require some level of skill or qualification, though in some instances on-the-job training is available.
Just as in any other industry, there is no one-stop-shop to find a position that best matches your skills qualifications and abilities.
You will need to first closely examine the skills, abilities and experience you can bring to a potential employer and then seek out suitable positions.
You will also need to consider your personal circumstances - whether you are able to move to a mining town, work fly-in-fly-out arrangements, the cost of housing in regional towns etc.

| Vacation work opportunities | |
Vacation work (or vac work) with a minerals or energy company is a short-term paid position offered to undergraduate students.
Vac work is usually on a mine site or at a power station, and is a great opportunity for students to experience a resources-sector career and the associated lifestyle.
Most of QRC’s member companies offer summer vacation work from December to February each year and some companies offer opportunities for winter vacation work from June to July.
Companies offer vac work to students who they believe best fit their company.
Having top grades is not always an essential as companies usually look for someone with a genuine interest in their organisation and the resources sector, a good work ethic, and a positive attitude. Many companies use vac work as a filter for identifying potential graduates.
Securing a vac work opportunity is competitive but students should not be discouraged, with hundreds of students gaining vac work with Queensland minerals and energy companies every year.
We recommend that even first-year university students apply as our member companies have a good track record of investing in first-year vac work students.
To view all the vac work opportunities available with minerals and energy companies, see QRC’s Facebook group Vac Work with Mining and Energy Companies.
