Idemitsu Australia Pty Limited - Ensham Resources
Idemitsu Australia is the Australian subsidiary of Tokyo based Idemitsu Kosan Co, Ltd. Idemitsu exports 12Mtpa of thermal and metallurgical coal from its Boggabri and Muswellbrook operations in New South Wales, and its Ensham operation in Queensland.
The Ensham operation comprises both an underground and an open cut mine, with total production levels of 5.2 million tonnes per annum (mtpa). The mine supports a workforce of approximately 550 people including employees and contractors.
The Underground mine is a bord and pillar operation with five production units producing coal and sending it to the surface stockpile via a series of conveyor belts. The Open Cut is a dragline operation with one active dragline removing overburden. Once exposed, the coal is removed by excavators and trucks and placed on stockpiles. The coal is transported from the stockpiles using large road trains to the coal plant where it is crushed and screened for size and then transported via rail to Gladstone Port for shipping. The majority of the high energy thermal coal produced at Ensham is exported to Japan and other Asian countries for power generation.
Ensham Resources is part owned (15%) by Bowen Investment (Australia) Pty Ltd, a subsidiary of Korea based LG Corporation.
