Local leaders resourcing major project pipeline across Queensland

Queensland’s resources sector will once again provide the foundations for our great state with the major projects pipeline being set by the Queensland government.

The pipeline includes essential energy infrastructure to support the North West Minerals Province, major water and transport projects across the state, and the once-in-a-generation opportunity presented by the Brisbane 2032 Olympic and Paralympic Games.

The Queensland Government’s 2032 Delivery Plan released in late March outlined a $7.1 billion infrastructure program to prepare for the Games that includes constructing new Olympic venues and enhancing transport networks across regional and South East Queensland.

“Major projects like the Olympics represent a huge moment for our state and the resources sector will play a pivotal role in resourcing the games,” Queensland Resources Council Chief Executive Janette Hewson said.

“Our sector is already leaving a legacy for Queensland and Queenslanders, through its economic contributions and community partnerships.

“In 2023-24, resources made an economic contribution worth $120.2 billion to the Queensland economy, generated 63,730 jobs and paid $12.8 billion in royalties that should fund essential community services, like health, roads and education.

“The construction and supply chains required for major projects will also see our sector contribute to another significant legacy.

“It is expected that 30,000 tonnes of steelmaking coal is needed for the new stadium and Queensland is home to the highest quality grade metallurgical coal in the world.

“Queensland contributes approximately 90 per cent of Australia’s steelmaking coal exports which last year reached 151 million tonnes and returned benefits for all Queenslanders through jobs and economic contributions.

“Of significance to the state is the established supply expertise and resources needed to power, manufacture and build venues to ensure we are ready for the major projects pipeline.”

The Queensland Local Content Leaders Network is an established group working with the sector and regions that will be central to resourcing major projects and ensuring regions can take advantage of the regional games.

“People working in Queensland resources industries, including our existing supply chains, can benefit from major projects and ensure economic returns for regions,” said Ms Hewson.

“Queensland’s Local Content Leaders Network operate across the state and in many of the areas earmarked for major projects.

“Networks like the Queensland Local Content Leaders provide the regional insights and connection to communities that are essential for proponents looking to develop major projects.”

The Queensland Local Content Leaders Network meeting held on Queensland Day, 6 June, highlighted the local legends that will resource major projects.

Today’s meeting heard of the opportunities and challenges presented by upcoming major projects in Queensland, including the need for local engagment, and shortages in skills and resources.

Members of the Queensland Local Leaders Network include the Greater Whitsunday Alliance, Resource Industry Network, Toowoomba Surat Basin Enterprise, Capricorn Enterprise, Central Highlands Development Corporation, Gladstone Engineering Alliance, C-RES and representatives from regional local councils.
