Regional Economic Futures Fund (REFF)

The Regional Economic Futures Fund (REFF) is a State Government $200 million initiative aimed at supporting communities in Queensland to capitalise on industry development opportunities driven by global decarbonisation. The fund is allocated to projects identified through regional consultation that will best support long-term economic growth.

QRC has welcomed funding under the REFF initiative to determine the viability of implementing renewable energy projects as a post-mining land use (PMLU) in the Bowen Basin. The project is a continuation of over four years of collaboration between the QRC, the Sustainable Minerals Institute (SMI) at the University of Queensland and QRC member companies.

$500,000 provided through the REFF along with a $50,000 contribution by the QRC will assist the mining sector and government to better understand the feasibility of leveraging renewable energy potential in the Bowen Basin. The project will examine its feasibility in the context of best delivering community and industry outcomes from the planned closure of mine sites, delivering innovative mine rehabilitation outcomes, supporting regional economic transition and diversification post-mining and contribute to global decarbonisation.
