The Queensland Resources Council (QRC) has welcomed the news Senex Energy will provide around 8 Petajoules (PJ), and potentially up to 12 PJ, of natural gas to a New South Wales-based sustainable fibre packaging and paper company.

An initial four-year agreement to deliver natural gas at a fixed price has been signed with Opal’s manufacturing operation in Botany, which extends Senex’s gas supply into New South Wales.

QRC Chief Executive Ian Macfarlane said the announcement is great news for Queensland and for Senex, which supplies the equivalent of 10 per cent of Queensland’s gas demand.

“Senex Energy’s natural gas offer is essential to support Opal’s ongoing manufacturing operation and demonstrates the wisdom of the Queensland Government’s domestic gas policy,” Mr Macfarlane said.

“It’s an excellent example of a Queensland resources company that’s focussed on building long-term and mutually beneficial partnerships to support thousands of jobs, the economy and ensures manufacturers can access the energy they need for their operations.

“This agreement broadens Senex’s reach as a supplier of natural gas to other states and we congratulate the team on its continuing success in shoring up supply contracts.”

Since 2019, Senex has signed around 70 PJ of natural gas sales agreements with a range of household names also including CSR Building Products, Orora, Visy Glass, CleanCo Queensland, Alinta Energy, Adbri, Nyrstar, Southern Oil Refining, and now Opal.
