Queensland resources contributed $115.2 billion in revenue and $7.9 billion in royalties last financial year all from 0.1% of the state’s land mass.

The scale of the economic, social and community benefits from such a small land mass are highlighted in a new public information campaign by the resources industry.

The Little Bit of Queensland campaign, running across Southeast Queensland and online, highlights the essential role of Queensland’s resources sector in the state’s economic and social fabric.

The campaign features resources operations in coal, natural gas, metals and minerals from a bird’s eye view and highlights the sector’s big impact from a small land mass.

Queensland Resources Council Chief Executive Officer Janette Hewson said Queenslanders should be proud of the sector and the state’s rich mining history because of the enriched prosperity it brought to the entire state.

“After recent flooding and continuing challenging economic headwinds, we are proud to show just what resources mean to this state,” Ms Hewson said.

“This campaign sets the record straight on the extent of our vast benefits and our small land footprint.

“Many Queenslanders expect the sector’s land footprint to be far greater than 0.1%. We tread lightly all the while delivering billions for Queenslanders.

“Not all Queenslanders have seen a mining operations in action and this campaign shows how the sector coexists within communities.

“Resources expenditure ripples through local economies in towns and cities creating jobs, sustaining small businesses and enabling training and apprenticeships.”

Key Queensland resources facts 2024-25:

  • $115.2 billion or $1 in every $4 of Queensland’s economy
  • $7.9 billion in royalties to fund community and frontline services
  • Almost 550,000 total jobs supported, 1 in every 5 jobs, 71,362 direct jobs
  • $8.6 billion in wages and salaries supporting local businesses and communities
  • $35.8 billion direct spending including local suppliers
  • Support for 17,600 local businesses and 1,733 community groups across the state

Ms Hewson said Queensland coal, natural gas, metals and minerals were all powering industries, supporting households and creating the technologies of tomorrow.

“Our resources fund hospitals, schools, transport and frontline services through the billions paid in royalties,” she said.

“We support the jobs and supply chains across the state and keeping regional businesses and communities thriving from contractors.

“We are a part of local communities, investing in training, apprentices, local events and long-term economic development.”
