Queensland’s sustainable mining practices set the benchmark for global environment, social and governance (ESG) standards, offering actionable insights for Vietnam’s evolving mining sector.

The Queensland Resources Council (QRC) CEO, Janette Hewson, delivered a keynote address at the recent Vietnam Mining Law Support Project, a landmark initiative organised by the Australian Embassy in Vietnam, to modernise mining legislation while embedding sustainability and robust ESG practices at its core.

In her address, Ms Hewson highlighted Queensland’s pioneering approach to sustainable activities in the resources sector – showcasing how rigorous environmental governance, effective mine rehabilitation, and proactive community engagement have established a blueprint for a responsible resources sector.

Ms Hewson also detailed the technology-led transformation underway in Australia and how the resources sector is critical to a diverse energy mix.

“I firmly believe that the World depends on the essential minerals and raw materials supplied by Queensland’s resources sector. Without these critical resources, the large-scale technological transformation we require would simply not be achievable,” Ms Hewson said.

The address included the significant strides that Queensland’s resources sector has made to decarbonise the sector and develop environmental initiatives that are mutually beneficial.

“By sharing our experiences and benchmark practices and projects, we can be confident that our journey in creating a sustainable resources sector can serve as a guiding example for Vietnam,” Hewson said.

“It is clear that sustainability, robust ESG practices, and genuine collaboration are not optional – they are essential for the long-term success of the resources industry in Queensland, Australia and the rest of the world,” she concluded.

The Vietnam Mining Law Support Project brought together government officials, industry leaders, and international experts for a critical forum on modernising mining legislation and elevating global standards. The event underscores the need for responsible resource management and regulatory innovation that balances economic growth with environmental stewardship.

The event was held by the Australian Embassy in Hanoi/Vietnam on 26–27 February, attracting participants from leading Australian government agencies – including the New South Wales and Western Australia Governments, the Department of Industry, Science and Resources and the Minerals Council of Australia, as well as industry leaders and expert advisory groups.
